Heathrow airport to Exeter Castle Transfers
Rougemont Castle, commonly known as Exeter Castle, is a historic castle in the English city of Exeter. Following Exeter's insurrection against William the Conqueror, it was erected into the northern corner of the Roman city walls in or shortly after 1068. King Stephen besieged it for three months in 1136. Later in the 12th century, an outer bailey was constructed, of which little remains today.
The castle is named from the red stone found on the hill and utilised in the construction of the original buildings, the largest of which is the huge early Norman gatehouse. It is surrounded on three sides by Rougemont Gardens and Northernhay Gardens, both of which are now managed by Exeter City Council.
