Heathrow airport to London by Tube

The Underground, sometimes known as "the Tube," is the cheapest mode of transportation between Heathrow and Central London. When accompanied by an adult, children under the age of 11 travel for free. Prior to boarding, you can buy single paper tickets from a machine or pay with an Oyster card (a contactless smartcard used to pay for public transit in London) or another contactless card.

Even at off-peak periods, the subway rarely takes more than 10 minutes to arrive.

Heathrow Airport is located at the western end of the Piccadilly line, which is dark blue in colour. There are three London Underground stations at the airport: one for Terminals 2 and 3, and one for Terminals 4 and 5. The Piccadilly line runs across central London, stopping at several of the city's most popular destinations (South Kensington, Piccadilly Circus, Covent Garden, and Kings Cross), and is likely the cheapest way to get into or out of town.

Because many stations include steps, it might be challenging if you are carrying luggage. Also, return flight flights from the US tend to land you on the Tube around rush hour, and if you're changing trains between 8 and 10 a.m., it'll be difficult to get aboard a crowded train with luggage.

Trains begin operating just after 5 a.m. and end after midnight, so double-check your train schedules on the TFL route planner, especially if you have an early morning flight. On Fridays and Saturdays, the Piccadilly Line is open 24 hours a day, with night trains running every 10 minutes to and from Terminals 2, 3, and 5. There is no service from Terminal 4, however, a walkway can be used to transfer.

Adults pay £6 ($7.25) for a single Tube ticket from Heathrow (zone 6) to central London (zone 1), or £3.10 ($3.75) for a single price to central London when paying with a contactless credit card. It costs £5.10 ($6.15) to travel between 6:30 and 9:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. When accompanied by an adult, children under the age of 11 travel for free.

The express train is likely your best choice if you want to get into the heart of London quickly, especially if you're staying near Paddington Station. The Heathrow Express takes 15 minutes from Terminals 2 and 3 and 20 minutes from Terminal 5. For a large party, it can be costly, but by reserving ahead of time, you can save up to 75% on tickets.

Children under the age of 15 travel free in Express or Business Class when accompanied by a paid adult. Tickets may be purchased using the app, at a machine, or on the bus (most expensive). Because online tickets range from $7 one-way to $33.70 one-way for Express Class, it's important to reserve them more than 90 days ahead of time to get the best deals. At the Heathrow Express gates, contactless cards are accepted. Luggage racks, outlets at the seats, and Wi-Fi are all available on the Heathrow Express. Trains operate from around 5 a.m. to 12 a.m.

The journey to London Paddington takes 15 minutes from Terminals 2 and 3 and 21 minutes from Terminal 5. Start your journey to Terminal 4 by using the free transfer service from Heathrow Terminals 2 and 3, which adds four minutes to your journey.
