London Bridge Overview

The London Bridge neighbourhood has a plethora of ancient and modern sights, food markets, restaurants, pubs, and cultural places to visit. Tower Bridge, The Shard, Borough Market, White Cube Bermondsey, and HMS Belfast are among the highlights.

Between the City of London and Southwark, in central London, many bridges with the name London Bridge have spanned the River Thames. The current crossing, which opened to traffic in 1973, is a concrete and steel box girder bridge. It replaced a stone-arched bridge erected in the 19th century, which in turn replaced a 600-year-old stone-built mediaeval construction. This was followed by a series of timber bridges, the earliest of which was constructed by London's Roman founders.

The present bridge is located at the western end of the Pool of London, 30 metres upstream from prior alignments. The church of St Magnus-the-Martyr on the northern side and Southwark Cathedral on the southern bank marked the approaches to the mediaeval bridge. London Bridge was the sole road crossing of the Thames downstream of Kingston upon Thames until Putney Bridge constructed in 1729. London Bridge has been represented in various forms in art, literature, and music.
